Haunted Practice

the Pumpkin King's practice rooms

For grown-ups

These are the explainers behind groups of Haunted House problems: Grade 1 tens and ones and telling the time, Grade 5 decimals, and percentages for Grades 5 and 6. Each section lists the Haunted House problem types it prepares for. It does not ask quiz questions from a bank: each room shows the idea with something you can move — pumpkins, clock hands, a place-value chart, a hundred square, a bar — says it aloud, and then asks the child to do it.

A wrong try gets a hint, never the answer (the same rule as Haunted House). After three tries a Skip appears. The explanation comes after the child gets it. Rooms run in the suggested order but every room is open. Nothing leaves this device; progress is kept in this browser only.

The voice: the Pumpkin King speaks with recorded lines (a neural voice, recorded in advance and kept beside this page), so it sounds natural on every device. If you prefer the device's own voice, pick one in the voice menu: it picks the best natural voice the device has. The best ones (★★ Premium, ★ Enhanced) must be downloaded once — on an iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (or Spoken Content) → Voices → English, then download Ava (Premium) or Samantha (Enhanced), and reload this page. On a Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System voice → Manage Voices.
